Race morning, what for the start gun, I was already feeling apprehensive about the heat so opted out of any warm up apart from the 50m to the start line. It’s not ideal and it took me a good 500m of the swim to feel somewhat comfortable but in the long run keeping my hr down that little bit longer may help later in the race. So two thirds into the swim I managed to find the lead and settle into a comfortable pace but only to get rolled exciting the water in second place.
Transition was swift and I was out on to the bike in second with a small gap back to the chasers. I wasn’t feeling all that flash and was sitting 50m back form Courtney Atkinson try to bridge up, it wasn’t until two guys came past that the gap was brought back and the lead pack of four was established. After about 15km my legs decided to get with the programme and came good and we also got a glimpse of the second group which were quite some distance back so I thought that this could work and we could make the winning move. I hit the lead and pushed the pace, it’s hard getting everyone to want to work together, I guess if someone can’t pull a turn because they’re fatigued or saving their running legs then I can’t change things so I stuck with riding on the front for the rest of the ride feeling confident that I could still put together a solid run time.
Another good transition and I was out side by side with Tim Reed who had ridden well and caught us at 70km, he was setting a faster pace so I just focused on a steady run to build on later through the course. I wasn’t running too bad for the first 10-11km around 1:15/16 pace but was starting to get pretty warm and with 10km to go I started to worry about overheating which has blown me before, I started to drift back through the field and no matter how much cold water and ice I was getting over me I wasn’t feeling any improvement. So in the end was lucky to hang on to 6th.
I am determined to beat the heat, and will start a new plan to tackle the challenge in my next training block. Generally I am pretty pleased with my form, there are still some areas that I can work on but am confident a couple of specific workouts will get me that pretty fast.
So back home to Kinloch today, need a few more layers for training there with 0 degree mornings!
